The Moon is thought to have formed about 4.5 billion years ago, shortly after the Earth. The most widely accepted theory is that the Moon was formed from the debris left over from a giant impact between the Earth and a Mars-sized body called Theia. The impact is thought to have ejected a large amount of material into orbit around the Earth, which eventually coalesced to form the Moon.
