  • Aristarchus of Samos: Pioneer of the Heliocentric Model
The ancient Greek philosopher Aristarchus of Samos (c. 310 BCE - c. 230 BCE) is credited with being the first person to propose the model of a Sun-centered Solar System, also called the heliocentric model. Although some earlier Greek thinkers had suggested the idea that the Earth orbited the Sun, Aristarchus presented a more detailed and mathematically rigorous explanation. He also correctly deduced the order of the planets from the Sun, with Mercury being the closest and Saturn (along with the five other known planets at the time) being the farthest.
