  • Understanding the Sun's Photosphere: What You See
The layer of the Sun we are viewing when we look at it is called the photosphere. The photosphere is the outermost layer of the Sun and is the layer that emits the most light. It is composed of hot, glowing gases, mainly hydrogen and helium, and has a turbulent, grainy appearance. The photosphere is where sunspots, which are dark areas caused by strong magnetic fields, can be observed.
