  • Exosphere: Earth's Outermost Atmospheric Layer - Definition & Characteristics
The correct term for the segment of the atmosphere that blends into interplanetary space is the exosphere. The exosphere is the outermost layer of Earth's atmosphere. Here the air is extremely thin, and the atmosphere gradually transitions to the vacuum of space. The exosphere extends from the top of the thermosphere at approximately 500 km above the Earth's surface to the outer limit of the atmosphere at about 10,000 km.
