The stratosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere that extends from the top of the troposphere at about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the bottom of the mesosphere at about 50 kilometres (31 mi). The stratosphere is characterized by a decrease in temperature with increasing altitude, in contrast to the troposphere where the temperature decreases with increasing altitude.
