  • Earth's Incoming Solar Radiation: Absorption, Reflection, and Scattering
The three things that can happen to the radiation that Earth receives from the Sun are:

    1. Absorption: Some of the radiation is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere, including gases like carbon dioxide and water vapour. This absorption helps to regulate the Earth's temperature.

    2. Reflection: Some of the radiation is reflected back into space by clouds, ice, and other reflective surfaces on Earth. This reflection helps to cool the Earth's surface.

    3. Scattering: Some of the radiation is scattered by particles in the atmosphere, such as dust and water droplets. This scattering creates the blue colour of the sky and also contributes to the formation of clouds.
