  • Troposphere: Key Characteristics & Its Role in Earth's Weather
    1) Contains all of Earth's weather: As the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere is where all of Earth's weather occurs. This includes everything from clouds to precipitation, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. The thickness of the troposphere varies from about 9 km at the poles to about 18 km at the equator, and it contains about 75% of the total mass of the atmosphere.

    2) Jet Stream: The jet stream is a fast-flowing, narrow air current found in the upper levels of the troposphere. It is caused by the difference in temperature between the tropics and the polar regions, and it plays a major role in determining the weather patterns around the globe. The jet stream can reach speeds of up to 250 mph and can extend for thousands of miles.
