During a sunset, molecules in the atmosphere interact with sunlight and scatter most of the blue and violet light in all directions. This is because blue and violet light have shorter wavelengths and are more easily scattered by particles in the atmosphere. The remaining unscattered light appears orange, red, and yellow, which is why we see these colors during sunset.
