Mendeleev and other scientists were able to use the periodic table to predict properties of undiscovered elements because the periodic table allowed them to see patterns and relationships between the elements. For example, Mendeleev was able to predict the existence of germanium, gallium, and scandium based on their positions on the periodic table. He was also able to predict their properties, such as their atomic weights and densities.
