  • Periodic Table Groups: Understanding Columns and Their Significance
    The tall columns of the periodic table are called groups. These groups are identified with two different notations: group numbers and group names. The group numbers are located at the top of each column, and they designate the number of valence electrons in the atoms of that group. The group names are located below the numbers and are based on the characteristics of the elements in that group.
