Mars is actually only weakly magnetic, with a magnetic field that is only about 1/100th as strong as Earth's. The magnetic field of Mars is generated by the movement of molten iron in the planet's core, just as Earth's magnetic field is generated by the movement of molten iron in its core. However, the magnetic field of Mars is much weaker than Earth's because the core of Mars is smaller and cooler than the core of Earth.
