In July 1994, fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter. The impacts were observed by telescopes on Earth and by the Galileo spacecraft which was in orbit around Jupiter at the time. The impacts produced dark spots in Jupiter's atmosphere which were visible for several months.
