  • WMO: El Niño and La Niña Unlikely in First Half of 2013
El Nino, La Nina unlikely to show up in first half of 2013, WMO says

    * The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has said that El Nino and La Nina, the two main climate phenomena in the Pacific Ocean, are unlikely to show up in the first half of 2013.

    * This is because the current sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean are close to average, and the WMO does not expect any significant changes in the coming months.

    * El Nino is characterized by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, while La Nina is characterized by unusually cool sea surface temperatures in the same region.

    * Both El Nino and La Nina can have a significant impact on weather patterns around the world, causing droughts, floods, heat waves, and other extreme weather events.

    * The WMO said that it will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
