  • Solar Activity: Understanding Sunspot Cycles and Recent Observations
The sun is not currently experiencing an unusually quiet period in terms of sunspots. In fact, solar activity has been relatively high in recent months, with frequent sunspot activity and associated phenomena such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Sunspot numbers do vary over time, following an 11-year cycle known as the solar cycle. During this cycle, the number of sunspots and associated solar activity tends to increase to a peak, then decrease to a minimum before ramping up again. Currently, the sun is approaching the peak of the 24th solar cycle, so sunspot activity is expected to remain elevated for the next few years.
