  • Edouard Strengthens to Category 1 Hurricane in Atlantic - Satellite Imagery
Satellite images taken on September 16, 2022 showed Tropical Storm Edouard transitioning into a hurricane while moving over the the central Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center estimated maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (mph), making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Edouard was located about 1,100 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, and it was moving west at 15 mph. The storm is expected to remain over the open ocean and not pose any threat to land areas.

The satellite images showed that Edouard had a well-defined circulation center with deep convection near its core. The storm also had a spiral banding pattern of clouds and thunderstorms.

Edouard is the fifth named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. The season has been relatively inactive so far, with only four other named storms forming before Edouard. However, the peak of the hurricane season typically occurs in September, so it is still possible that more storms could form in the coming weeks.
