  • NEOWISE Comet: Visibility & Viewing Tips for Binoculars
Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) is a sungrazer comet that was first observed by the Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) spacecraft on March 27, 2020. The comet reached perihelion (its closest approach to the Sun) on July 3, 2020, and is now moving away from the Sun.

Comet NEOWISE is currently visible in the northern hemisphere with binoculars and small telescopes. It is expected to be visible to the naked eye in late July and early August. The comet is located in the constellation Ursa Major, near the star Alkaid.

To find Comet NEOWISE, you will need to:

    1. Find the constellation Ursa Major. Ursa Major is a large constellation that is shaped like a giant dipper. The two stars at the end of the dipper's handle are called Merak and Phecda.

    2. Draw an imaginary line between Merak and Phecda. Extend this line for about 5 degrees.

    3. Comet NEOWISE will be visible in the binoculars as a small, fuzzy object near the end of the line you just drew.

Comet NEOWISE is a beautiful and rare comet. If you have a chance to see it, don't miss it!
