  • Volcanic Eruption and the Extinction of Neanderthals: A 40,000-Year Debate
There is some debate amongst paleoanthropologists and geologists whether a supervolcanic eruption, known as Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) at the boundary between present-day Campania and Basilicata regions in Italy caused climate changes that contributed to the decline of both Neanderthals and megafauna around 40,000 years. Although some researchers argue that climate cooling related to the volcanic eruption could have affected availability of resources of both, there is not conclusive evidence confirming a direct causation or a significant impact on Neanderthal populations on that specific timeframe.
