New Horizons didn't answer this question. Instead, the spacecraft revealed that space is actually not dark at all. As the spacecraft traveled further into the Kuiper Belt, it detected a faint glow coming from the empty space between stars. This glow is thought to be caused by the collective light of distant galaxies and stars that are too faint to be seen individually.
