  • Atlantic Hurricane Names: Understanding the WMO List & Current Season
The naming of tropical storms and hurricanes is a regular procedure carried out by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The WMO maintains a list of storm names that are used in alphabetical order. When a tropical storm or hurricane forms, it is given the next name on the list.

The current list of storm names for the Atlantic Ocean includes:

    Alberto

    Beryl

    Chris

    Debby

    Ernesto

    Fernand

    Gabrielle

    Humberto

    Ingrid

    Jerry

    Karen

    Lorenzo

    Melissa

    Nestor

    Olga

    Pablo

    Rina

    Sean

    Tammy

    Vince

    Whitney

If more than 21 storms form in a single season, additional names are taken from a supplementary list. The supplementary list includes names such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and Zeta.

The naming of storms helps to identify them and to track their movements. It also helps to raise awareness of the potential risks associated with tropical storms and hurricanes.

The next storm that forms in the Atlantic Ocean will be named Alberto. If another storm forms after Alberto, it will be named Beryl.
