  • Extremely Large Telescope & Proxima Centauri b: Potential for Habitable Worlds?
    Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the Sun and is located only 4.2 light years away. It is a red dwarf star, meaning it is smaller and cooler than our own Sun. Proxima Centauri has at least one planet orbiting it, known as Proxima Centauri b.

    Proxima Centauri b is a rocky planet that is about the size of Earth and is located in the habitable zone of its star, meaning it could potentially support liquid water on its surface. However, Proxima Centauri b is tidally locked to its star, meaning that one side of the planet is always facing the star while the other side is always facing away. This could result in extreme temperature differences between the two sides of the planet, making it difficult for life to survive.

    The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is a next-generation optical and infrared telescope that is currently under construction in Chile. The ELT will be the largest and most powerful optical telescope in the world, and it will be able to see objects 10 times fainter than those visible to the naked eye.

    The ELT will be able to study Proxima Centauri b in great detail and will be able to search for signs of life on the planet. The ELT will also be able to study other planets in our solar system and will be able to search for planets around other stars.

    The ELT will be able to provide us with a wealth of information about Proxima Centauri b and will help us to better understand our place in the universe.
