  • Comet Origins: Could Comet Material Pre-Date the Solar System?
Yes, it is possible that the organic material in comets predates the solar system. Comets are believed to be left-over debris from the protoplanetary disk that existed around the Sun before the formation of the planets. The volatile material of comets, such as water, carbon dioxide, and ammonia, is thought to have condensed from the gas and dust in the protoplanetary disk. In addition, some comets may contain organic molecules that were synthesized in the interstellar medium before the formation of the Sun and the protoplanetary disk. For these reasons, the organic material in comets is thought by many to be older than the Sun and the planets, and may provide insights into the chemical composition and conditions of the early solar system and the interstellar medium before its existence.
