The Dark Side of the Moon

The dark side of the moon is a term used to describe the hemisphere of the Moon that is not visible from Earth. This does not mean that the dark side is always in darkness, as it still receives sunlight just like the side facing Earth. However, the dark side of the moon is less understood and explored because it is not visible to observers on Earth.

In reality, the moon is tidally locked to Earth, which means that the same side of the moon is always facing Earth. This is why we can only ever see one side of the moon from Earth. The dark side of the moon, therefore, refers to the side of the moon that faces away from Earth.

Location of the Dark Side of the Moon

The dark side of the moon is located on the far side of the moon, facing away from Earth. It is the hemisphere of the moon that is not visible from Earth and was first seen by the Luna 3 spacecraft in 1959.

The dark side of the moon is often depicted as being completely dark, but this is not actually the case. The sun still shines on the dark side of the moon, but because it is not facing Earth, we cannot see it from our perspective. The dark side of the moon is actually lit up by the sun just as much as the side facing Earth, but we can't see it because it is turned away from us.
