  • Sloan Great Wall: Unraveling the Mystery of Cosmic Structure
    The existence of the so-called "Pancake" cosmic structure -- a vast concentration of matter in the universe that is 2 billion light-years across and just 100 million light-years thick -- has captivated and perplexed astronomers since its discovery in 2003. One of the fundamental mysteries has been how the great cosmic pancake, officially called the Sloan Great Wall, could form under conventional theories of cosmology.

    A group of researchers led by Yuval Birnboim of the University of Alabama in collaboration with Yehuda Hoffman and Avishai Dekel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, propose that the Great Pancake originated from a large "void" -- an immense volume devoid of matter -- in the early universe. The void would have acted like a template for the formation of gigantic cosmic structures. Their results were recently published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

    The team utilized computer simulations of the cosmic web, the large-scale structure of matter in the universe, to explore the potential link between cosmic voids and the formation of gigantic cosmic structures. Their high-resolution simulations revealed that massive voids can create density fluctuations that lead to the formation of vast, thin structures like the Great Pancake.

    According to their hypothesis, the voids create distortions in the cosmic web, and the matter flows away from the voids, forming massive walls and filaments of galaxies surrounding them. The pancake structure develops as the mass accumulates in these filaments, aligning in a plane.

    The study sheds light on the interplay between cosmic voids and matter distribution, providing a novel explanation for the formation of extremely large structures in the universe. While further observations and simulations are needed to validate this hypothesis, the idea of cosmic voids acting as architects of cosmic pancakes offers a promising avenue to unraveling some of the mysterious cosmic structures that shape the universe we observe.
