  • Hurricane Madeline Weakens to Tropical Storm as it Approaches Hawaii - Satellite Images
Satellites Show Hurricane Madeline Weakened to a Tropical Storm

Satellite images show that Hurricane Madeline has weakened to a tropical storm as it neared Hawaii on Wednesday. Madeline was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane earlier in the day.

The storm is currently located about 150 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and about 210 miles east-northeast of Pahala, Hawaii, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.

The storm is moving west at 10 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, the NHC said.

The NHC said that some weakening is forecast before the storm makes landfall in Hawaii on Friday as it moves over cooler waters and encounters increasing vertical shear.

    Tropical storm warnings in effect

The following areas in Hawaii are under tropical storm warnings:

    - Hawaii County

    - Maui County

    - The Island of Oahu

Heavy rains and strong winds expected

The NHC said that the storm is expected to produce total rainfall of 6 to 10 inches, with isolated totals of 15 inches, over the eastern parts of the Big Island.

Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected over Maui, Molokai, and Lanai, with isolated totals of 10 inches possible on Maui and Molokai.

The NHC said that the storm is also expected to produce high seas of 8 to 12 feet near the storm's center and in some coastal areas.

The storm is expected to pass near or over the main Hawaiian Islands on Friday, and tropical storm conditions are likely over at least portions of the islands, according to the NHC.

    Residents advised to stay safe

The NHC advised residents in Hawaii to stay informed about the latest forecasts and to take precautions to stay safe.

Heavy rain and winds from Madeline could cause power outages and damage to property, so residents are advised to secure their homes and belongings.
