The star, named S5-HVS1 and nicknamed the Methuselah Star, is indeed moving incredibly fast and contains very low levels of the elements heavier than helium — in astronomy-speak, "metal poor" stars have lower proportions of these elements relative to lighter hydrogen and helium elements. Astronomers are excited about it for these very reasons and have several theories for why it could look the way it does.
