  • NASA Astronauts Face Potential Delay: Return to Earth Uncertain
As of April 2022, NASA astronauts Mark Vande Hei and Anton Shkaplerov are scheduled to return to Earth in March 2023, along with Russian cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov. This updated timeline was announced by Russian space officials due to a leak on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, which prevents it from safely transporting the crew back to Earth.

The decision was made after discussions between NASA and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency. NASA has agreed to extend the mission of Vande Hei and Shkaplerov for the time being, while Roscosmos works on a plan to bring them back safely. The Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft, which is currently docked at the International Space Station, will likely be used to bring the crew back to Earth.

The leak on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft was first discovered in December 2022. It caused a coolant leak in the spacecraft, making it unsafe to use for the return trip to Earth. NASA and Roscosmos have been working together since then to find a solution, but they have not yet been able to come up with a permanent fix.

The extension of Vande Hei and Shkaplerov's mission is a significant event, and it has been met with a mix of reactions. Some people are concerned about the astronauts' safety, while others are excited to see them continue their work on the space station. Only time will tell how this situation will unfold, but it is clear that it has the potential to impact future space missions.
