The Colossi of Memnon were two massive stone statues located in Egypt, near the ancient city of Thebes. The statues were carved out of blocks of quartzite sandstone and stood over 18 metres (60 feet) tall. They were built around 1350 BCE during the reign of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep III. The statues depicted Amenhotep III and his mother, Queen Mutemwia.

One of the most interesting things about the Colossi of Memnon was the fact that they were said to sing at sunrise. According to ancient Greek and Roman writers, the statues would emit a musical sound when the first rays of sunlight hit them. This sound was said to be a sign that the gods were happy with Egypt.

There are several theories about how the Colossi of Memnon produced this sound. One theory is that the statues were hollow and that the air inside them would heat up when the sun rose, causing it to expand and create a whistling noise. Another theory is that the statues were made of a type of stone that contained tiny crystals that would vibrate when exposed to sunlight, producing a musical sound.

Whatever the cause of the sound, it was certainly a popular tourist attraction in ancient Egypt. People would travel from all over the world to see the Colossi of Memnon and hear their mysterious song.

The statues have since been damaged by earthquakes and other natural disasters, and the singing has ceased. However, the Colossi of Memnon remain an impressive sight and a reminder of the ancient Egyptian civilisation.
